WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL |
ENGLAND started this meeting as favourites and progressed in the competition with very few worries, Hayden Wood leading the way with a brilliant 17 and receiving quality support from Steve Edgar. IRELAND were very much outsiders but the host nation used all their track knowledge with a fine team performance seeing them through - Alan Connor started well but when he did slip his partner rose to the occasion with Sam McCurdy adding 8 points and reserve Shane Dwyer coming in to pick up a point when called upon. The Final qualifying spot was a much tighter one with every side in the running but eventually JAPAN progressed, thanks to a run-off win from top man Hideto Kisaka and clever use of their reserve after introducing Masahiko Miyama who added a useful supporting score of 5+2. |
The run-off losers, in this meeting of shocks, other than for the English, were two-times winners Russia for whom Federenko lost to Kisaka in the crucial decider. Both Federenko and Dvoynev scored solidly but neither could find the consistency required to get them across the line and into the Semi Finals (the results from the other meetings confirming their 17 points weren't enough for one of the best 4th placed nations qualifying places). Sweden were well led by Svensson but he was offered very little support as the Scandinavian side, who most expected to be likely Finalists, dipped out before the Semi Final stage. As Ireland and England progressed their neighbours, Wales and Scotland, both relied too heavily on one rider and ended a couple of points short. Szczygiel was excelled for the Welsh but his partners added just 2 points to his 13+1 return and although Cormack scored well for Scotland his support started and finished well but offered no points in between which is never going to be enough for a side at this standard of competition. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL |
POLAND were the big favourites, the host nation and expected to qualify with ease, which they did! Both Boguslaw Kryznowek and Jacek Klecha added 12 points to the total and, as always, they look like one of the sides to beat in this year's world title charge. Behind them NORWAY turned in a similarly impressive pairs display with both Carsten Ostenstad and Olle Bjorn Thoresen recording double figure returns. HUNGARY finished 3rd on 19 points, led by the impressive Jakub Fekete to also qualify without the need to check out the scorers from the other Quarter Final meetings. Behind them BULGARIA were placed 4th due to having 2 bonus points in the meeting, to Germany's 1 and this proved enough to reward the impressive displays of Petar Bosilek and Rumun Dimotrov with a Semi Final spot once all the Quarter Final results were in. |
It was harsh on Germany but they relied too heavily on Benkarth. The other pairings never really challenged with both the Netherlands and Brazil struggling to make a consistent enough impact although all their riders did show flashes and they were not out of their depth. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL |
There were 4 very powerful looking sides in this meeting and 3 of them led the way with relatively straightforward qualification. Kenni Algreen and Steen Eriksen led DENMARK to the win in this meeting but defending champions the CZECH REPUBLIC, with Vaclav Ruzucha and Petr Marko impressive, almost matched them every step of the way and Jack Hagen scored 14 to ensure the USA didn't have any slip ups. Italy were predicted by many to get through with no problems and Australia were expected to be in the mix too but it was host nation SOUTH AFRICA who took what proved to be the all-important 4th place. Andre Hayward used all his track knowledge to race to a 14+1 score and a late cameo from Ian Jacques was vital in taking them to 18 points which is enough to see them into the Semi Finals as one of the highest scoring 4th placed nations. |
Australia were always going to provide a solid challenge and did through Pierce and Tebby but they needed a little extra spark and the former faded in the meeting wihlst the latter didn't record a race victory and it left them short. The big shock was the disappointing display of the Italians - Innacone scored 9+2 but any support was hit and miss at best and they were some way short. Lesnik battled hard for Croatia but they were never on the pace with little support for his 9+1 return. |

WORLD PAIRS QUARTER FINAL |
Some less obvious big names in the last of the Quarter Finals but NEW ZEALAND (Paul Laing and Fillippe Chong both scoring 12 for their nation) and CANADA (Jean-Marc Struthers with 12 and Jackson Roy also reaching double figures) were tipped to lead the way and encountered little in the way of serious challenge to their progression in the competition. The field behind looked very even and it was LATVIA who stood up to be counted with a fantastic display from Leonid Izotov and Henrijs Birkerts seeing both record double figure returns that gave them 2nd in the meeting. |
The rest were some way off on the day. Helinen did pretty well for Finland but Niemi was struggling and the fine display from Pahlman in the second half of the meeting wasn't enough as the damage had been done by that stage with their 17 points not enough to put them as one of the highest scoring 4th places across the four Quarter Finals. Estonia produced a solid pairs performance but didn't have the standout consistency needed to get out of a Quarter Final at world level and a similar story could be said for Slovenia too. Belgium were always going to need top man Joossens to really perform but he had an off day and that was always going to make it too difficult a task for them. |
